Need to get into your iPad more quickly? Want an extra layer of security on your iPad?
Today’s Tip:
Setting up Touch ID in addition to your numerical passcode allows only you to enter your iPad. While your passcode can be seen and used by others, Touch ID uses your fingerprint to allow access to your device and can’t be duplicated by others (except in a spy movie scenario).
You may have already configured this setting when you initially activated your iPad, but you can still manage this through the Settings app. You may also want to add fingerprints to be able to gain entry in a few different ways.
To set up Touch ID:
- Go to the Settings app (gear icon).
- In the menu along the right-hand side, scroll and select Touch ID & Passcode.
- Enter your passcode to begin altering your settings.
- In the Touch ID & Passcode menu, find the Fingerprints section.
- Choose Add a Fingerprint.
- In the tutorial, place the finger you want to use for access on the Home button (do not click the Home button). Lift and place your finger repeatedly on the Home button.
- Continue through the prompts to capture the edges of your finger, rotating your finger to get different angles of the same finger.
- Finish the tutorial and your Touch ID will be successfully set up.
Touch ID will default to use for iPad Unlock, Wallet & Apple Pay, iTunes & App Store, and Password AutoFill, but each of these settings can be toggled off in the top section of this menu.
Note: The Touch ID & Passcode menu is where you will come if you’d like to change your passcode as well.
Alternatively, to unlock your device using Touch ID without pressing the Touch ID sensor, go to the Settings app. In the menu on the left-hand side, scroll and select Accessibility. In the menu on the right-hand side, scroll and select the Home button. At the bottom, click the toggle button to turn on Rest Finger to Open.
