Trying to download new apps to your iPad? Have apps that you’ve deleted but keep reappearing?
Today’s Tip:
If you came to one of the training sessions in May, you heard some of this information already. A list of all apps offered via push or Self Service can be found on the Penn State Altoona Sharepoint Site under the App tab. Read the descriptions below to know the differences between pushed and Self Service apps.
Pushed Apps and Links
All faculty, staff, and (eventually) student iPads will have the same profile of apps and links pushed automatically to their device from a collaboration between OIT and Instructional Design.
- Pushed apps – You may have noticed that some apps came already installed on your iPad. The Office of Instructional Design, in collaboration with several faculty and staff, identified apps that have broad use for faculty, staff, and students. These apps were automatically pushed to all devices. If you choose to delete any, they will return should we push a new set of apps to all devices.
- Pushed links – You should also see that three links were placed on your device – The Help Tool for students, the Red Folder for faculty and staff, and the Penn State Altoona iPad sharepoint site.
Self-Service Apps
Self Service apps are those that faculty, staff, or (eventually) students may choose to install on their device. Apps in this category include Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, Canvas Teacher, Adobe Scan and Acrobat Reader.
You will find an app on your iPad home screen called Self Service (white app with multi-color tilted square as logo). This makes installing apps quick and easy! To install these apps from Self Service, click on the app then click to Show All.
- If the app has an “install” button and you’d like it on your device, simply click the install button to begin download.
- If the app has a “reinstall” button, the app is already on your device and no action is needed.
Do you want something added to the Pushed or Self Service app list?
Faculty and staff are encouraged to communicate other needed apps and links to the Office of Instructional Design. If they are not appropriate to be pushed to all devices, they may be added to Self Service. The intention is to update Self Service on the first of every month, but exceptions can be considered based on need.
Apple App Store
Any app can be downloaded to your device as you normally would on an Apple-supported device. These items are ones you search for in the App Store (pre-loaded on your device) and download by logging in with your Apple ID.
Courseware Approval
IMPORTANT! Please discuss course needs with the Office of Instructional Design should you want to require an app for your class that requires an account created or payment method entered by students and is NOT already on the approved courseware list. This app will need to be approved via Penn State Courseware before adoption (which can take 4-6 months).
