Do you need to see your screen or a specific app in a different view, possibly with a bit more space to read and annotate, but grow tired of the screen shifting back and forth from portrait to landscape mode?

Today’s Tip

The tip is simple, but let’s start with the basics: Your screen is said to be in portrait mode when the iPad is positioned with the home button at the bottom when viewing. Your screen is in landscape mode when the iPad is positioned with the home button on the side. Need a visual of this? Check the bottom of our Tour of the iPad page.

When you turn the iPad (referred to its orientation) between Portrait and Landscape modes, the appearance on your screen will change. Being able to change the orientation of the screen allows individuals to have a larger focus area for detailed work and also provides additional real estate for individuals with low vision to zoom in.

Should you want to lock the screen from shifting between orientation modes, you can use the rotation lock – the subject of today’s tip!

  1. Shift your iPad’s orientation to your preferred mode – Portrait or Landscape.
  2. Open your Control Center by using one finger to swipe down from the top right corner of your screen in this orientation.
  3. Tap the Rotation Lock button to lock (or unlock).

That’s it!
