AI Spotlight Series Recap
The first few times you use generative AI to build something for your instruction, it may feel a little foreign. This feeling is similar to one your students have when they experience your courses for the first time. It’s a new tool, and it can take some getting used to.
When generating content with AI, it is important to review what it produces for clarity. You may want to use AI as an ideation tool, a proof-reading tool, or as a way to create new projects and designs. Remember that you can always refine what it produces yourself, or ask the tool to refine it for you. Most of the time, generative AI tools give you multiple options, or different ways to change the content. It’s best to play around with it and become comfortable with it before you start depending on it.
For more information on generative AI and teaching, visit the Commonwealth Teaching Generative Artificial Intelligence and Teaching site. The faculty guides included on that website cover classroom conversations you can have about AI, how it fits into Academic Integrity challenges, AI literacy, and learning challenges. The site also includes additional Penn State resources that can help you prepare for AI use in your own personal preparation, as well as in the classroom.
This Spotlight Series on AI has been a deep dive on a lot of information, and, like the tool, may have felt overwhelming at times. Just like Canvas, Kaltura, and other tools the University depends on to function, AI tools have a learning curve. If you find yourself looking at Copilot and not quite sure how to get started, you can always start here:
You don’t need to use generative AI like you do a Google search, you can ask a question and see where the answer takes you.
