Do you want to be able to give quick feedback to students? Have phrases that you frequently use in your communications that you hate typing over and over again or end up copying and pasting from one message to another?

Today’s Tip

Text replacement can assist in streamlining your messaging and feedback to students. When you set up your text replacement shortcuts, words, phrases, or code letter combinations can automatically be replaced with longer phrases. Text replacement is especially helpful for individuals who have trouble with spelling, often reverse letters, or have difficulty typing.

How to Set Up Text Replacement

Setting up your text replacement settings is fairly straightforward and can be done in your device’s Settings app.

  1. Tap the Settings app and select General from the list on the left.
  2. Choose Keyboard from the General menu.
  3. Select Text Replacement from your Keyboard menu.
  4. To add a text replacement, tap the + button at the top of the screen.
  5. Enter the longer phrase you would like to have typed automatically in the Phrase field.
  6. Enter the shorter word or code you want to enter moving forward in the Shortcut field.
  7. Your Phrase and Shortcut will automatically save by tapping the Back arrow in this menu. You can delete phrases by swiping left on one of the phrases in the list and selecting Delete.

Note: It is recommended that you choose unique codes or abbreviations when setting up Text Replacement as this will affect your autocorrect settings as well. For example, you might have a Phrase that says “Please check the annotations on your document.” with a Shortcut like “anno” since you might use the word “annotations” in other contexts with your iPad.
