A Video Walkthrough of Grading in Canvas

This section focuses on topics related to building rubrics and using the Canvas course gradebook. While rubrics can be built from within assignments or under Outcomes, gradebook functionality can be accessed by clicking on Grades in the course navigation menu. Important: Remember that any assignments that you want to show up in your gradebook must be created in either Assignments, Discussions, or Quizzes. You can build each type of assignment from under Modules also. Creating an assignment in any of these locations with the proper grading criteria will automatically populate the gradebook for you. All graded assignments will appear under Assignments in the course navigation menu.

The following videos can be found on this page. A description of each video is given.

Grid Rubrics

This video discusses how to create a grid, or analytic, rubric for use in grading an assignment or within peer review. A grid rubric is structured with the criteria listed in the leftmost column with levels of performance criteria listed in descending order from left to right. (Time: 6:53) This video is slightly outdated as you can now also add ranges into your point values.

Free Form Rubrics

This video discusses how to create a free form rubric, a useful alternative to the grid rubric, and one that is already commonly used by faculty. This rubric would resemble the type of project rubric many faculty use that merely gives a list of criteria with an associated point value. For example, whereas a grid rubric may breakdown grammar usage in a 4-3-2-1-0 format, this type of rubric merely states the grammar is worth 4 points and allows space to enter a point value and comment as to why the point value was earned. (Time: 3:15)

Gradebook Grid View

This video discusses the default gradebook grid view and all of the important features to consider.  (Time: 7:18)

Gradebook and SpeedGrader

Speedgrader is an interface that allows the instructor to view and grade student submissions. This first video (Time: 4:55) demonstrates how to use SpeedGrader for assignments that require a file upload. The second video (Time: 3:18) demonstrates using Speedgrader for an online discussion and online quiz assignment, and ends by showing you how to post your grades for student view.

Student Gradebook and What-if Grades

This video discusses the student view of the gradebook and an available function called What-If scores. What-If grades allow students to enter hypothetical grade/point values for assignment in order to forecast possible total grades. (Time: 3:06).
