Creating Online Assessments with Integrity in Mind

This session explored the changes that you can make to your assessments to take advantage of the affordances of the online environment while keeping integrity in mind. Topics included setting expectations for online assessments, determining the most effective delivery method in your teaching context, adapting both formative and summative assessments from in-person to online formats, and leveraging technology to incorporate assessment options to minimize possibilities for dishonesty. There was a focus on practical examples from faculty at Penn State, as well as, discussion tailored to a variety of courses.

2024 Teaching and Learning Conference

The 2024 Teaching and Learning Conference brought faculty and staff together for an engaging, hands-on conference designed to help faculty explore underutilized tools and strategies for enhancing teaching with technology. We had about 40 faculty members in attendance for learning, networking, and practical takeaways. 

2024 Commonwealth Connections Instructor Day

On 1/4/24 we heard from a panel of Commonwealth Campus faculty and students as they discussed their focus on future-readiness; developing a mindset and a set of competencies that enable lifelong learning, problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, and communication. 2023 Teaching and Learning Conference
The 2023 Teaching and Learning Conference brought faculty and staff together to build on their iPad knowledge, as well as their knowledge of their colleagues. The conference allowed professionals to cultivate cross-curriculum ideas, test out new technology, and gather critical iPad knowledge to bring back to their classrooms.
Crash Course in the Canvas Teacher App (Video)

In this session we explored the benefits of the Canvas Teacher app and how it can help student interactions and grading. We specifically looked at the app’s best practices, the Speedgrader, how to communicate with students, and the best ways to test and troubleshoot app issues.

Organizing Files with your iPad (Video)

This session explored ways to annotate files, as well as how to keep those files organized on your iPad. It also covered how to access and edit files within applications, as well as how to generate sharing links and share files with others. With annotation, we reviewed how to open, annotate, and save PowerPoint files, and even how to sign a PDF document. We also shared instructional applications for annotation to get you started.

Artificial Intelligence and Writing-Based Assignments (Video)

In this session we discussed how AI is changing the ways we teach. We specifically looked at ways to ethically incorporate artificial intelligence in each step of writing-based assignments, including invention, research, organization, genre awareness, and editing. As a group we identified examples of how faculty have already modified their instructional strategies to account for the rise of artificial intelligence.

Instructional Design Open Office Hours
An informal session for faculty and staff to get help with iPad features and functions that may be causing distress, some topics discussed included presenting from your iPad, file storage and sharing practices, and using apps like Canvas Teacher, OneNote, Notability, and Top Hat.
Using Virtual Whiteboards in the Classroom on Microsoft/Zoom (Video)
In this session we looked at the capabilities of Zoom Whiteboards and the Microsoft Whiteboard app. Together we identified and used basic toolbar options (pens, text, shapes, post-its, emojis) on a whiteboard, embedded external content, such as documents, images, videos, and links into whiteboard, reviewed advanced toolbar options, and shared whiteboards with others.

OneNote for iPad: Essential Features

This asynchronous course was designed to walk you through the main features of OneNote at your own pace. Learn how to capture and organize your ideas on your iPad, sync to other devices including your desktop, create interactive content, and share with colleagues.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify the basic features of OneNote on your iPad
  • Create and set up a OneNote notebook
  • Add interactive and accessible content
  • Share OneNote notebooks with others

2024 OneNote: Exploring the Class Notebook

This hybrid, interactive training session, tailored specifically for iPad users, focused on the practical applications of OneNote, specifically the OneNote Class Notebook. Guided by a use case, we explored the main features of the OneNote Class Notebook and how this digital note-taking tool can be used to stay organized and foster collaboration and engagement. The session also included a question-and-answer section to help users feel confident working in OneNote and the OneNote Class Notebook on the iPad.

    OneNote for Note Taking
    Using Microsoft’s digital note-taking app OneNote, this session explored how to structure and format notebooks, how to insert media, and how to use drawing mode with the Apple Pencil. We also looked at how to streamline workflow between the iPad and laptop/desktop computer, including changing “ink” to text and how to share and invite others to contribute or view a notebook.
    Top Hat Demo: General Features and Functions
    Looking at the different features and functions of Top Hat, this session covered polling questions, attendance features, testing capabilities, and extended features. It also took a look at possible applications of Top Hat in classroom instruction, as well as the  affordances and shortcomings of Top Hat for class activities. NOTE: Future sessions may dive deeper into each of the features and walk through their setup steps.
    Getting Started with Notability in the Classroom (Video)

    This session gave participants the opportunity to explore the Notability app. We worked together to build familiarity with app features that make it useful for teaching; including key tools, templates, and settings. We discussed those skills and how you can use the app as a virtual whiteboard during class. We also covered ways to utilize multi-note viewing and note switching.

    Top Hat Setup and Online Test Proctoring
    In a working session designed to get you started in Top Hat for online testing purposes, we focused on building Top Hat course sections and content, as well as examining and creating Top Hat questions. Together we determined syncing practices with Canvas, discussed the Top Hat Concierge Service, and identified use cases and best practices for classroom integration.
    Top Hat Polling and Attendance
    Top Hat can be a great tool to get formative assessment data from your classes through its polling features. In this session, we examined Top Hat question types, determined syncing practices with Canvas, discussed the affordances and limitations of Top Hat attendance features, created Top Hat polling questions, and explored live polling with the Top Hat desktop client.
    iPad Show and Tell: Lessons Learned
    In this session, we discussed ways we have been using our iPads so far and looked into new ideas for using the iPad for classroom instruction and workflow enhancement.
